Lewandowski: What I told Messi after fouling him

Poland star Robert Lewandowski has revealed what he told Argentina captain Lionel Messi during their FIFA World Cup encounter this week.

The nations both progressed to the round of 16 on Wednesday, with Argentina claiming top spot in the group after defeating runners-up Poland 2-0.

Lewandowski and Messi did have a coming together in the second half of the clash and exchanged words, although the Argentine star did not look to interested in the conversation.

"We talked a bit and it was fun. I told Messi that he was playing more defensively than usual, but sometimes that's what the team needs," Lewandowski told BILD.

Lewandowski and Poland did not have much attacking to do against the Argentines, with the Barcelona star chasing shadows for most of the 90 minutes.

When asked about Messi's reaction to being fouled by him, Lewandowski added, "That was very strange, yes: I was in the centre of the pitch defending, but I knew I had to help the team."

Poland will lock horns with reigning world champions France for a spot in the quarter-finals on Sunday evening.
