Portugal coach: I have no regrets benching Ronaldo

Portugal coach Fernando Santos insists he has no regrets benching Cristiano Ronaldo after their FIFA World Cup exit on Saturday.

A Selecao missed out on a spot in the semi-finals after losing 1-0 to Morocco, who became the first African side to reach the final four.

Ronaldo started on the bench as Portugal thrashed Switzerland 6-1 in the round of 16 on Tuesday, with Santos sticking with the same formula on Saturday evening.

Despite ending up on the losing side, the Portuguese tactician felt the 37-year-old came on at the right stage of the encounter.

"I don't think so, no regrets," Santos said, as per ESPN.

"I think this was a team which played very well against Switzerland. Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player, he came in when we thought it was necessary, so no regrets.

"If we take two persons that were the most upset it is Cristiano Ronaldo and myself. Of course we are upset, but that is part of the job of the coach and the player."

When asked about his future with the national side, he added, "I reiterate what I said before the competition, I have a discussion with the president and when we go back to Portugal we will deal with the issue of my contract."
