With Fernando Santos stepping down as Portugal coach on Thursday, the national team have reportedly already identified a successor.
Santos' departure comes days after Portugal were dumped out of the FIFA World Cup by Morocco in the quarter-finals.
The 68-year-old did lead the Portuguese national side to the 2016 European Championship and the UEFA Nations League title in 2019.
Portuguese publication Record claim that AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho is the Portuguese football federation's number one choice to take over from Santos.
The report adds that the federation would also entertain the idea of Mourinho managing both Roma and the national side to allow him to finish the 2022/2023 season.
Former Portugal and FC Porto star Maniche feels his former manager is the right candidate for the head coach role.
"Jose Mourinho makes perfect sense for the position, for everything he has already conquered and has been conquering," Maniche told Radio Renascenca.
"He has already been to the best clubs in the world, he has won titles in all of them and he lacks the national team.
"He is an experienced coach who is very prepared for difficulties because he knows our football and football abroad, he is intelligent and knows how to deal with young people. I think he would gather consensus to be a selector."
