Liverpool to sign African star next?

Liverpool are reportedly set to submit a bid for a Nigeria star following their recent acquisition of Netherlands striker Cody Gakpo.

After enduring an underwhelming start to the season, during which they picked up just six wins in 14 Premier League games before the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off, the Reds have now begun strengthening their squad ahead of the January transfer window.

Earlier this week, the Merseyside club reached an agreement to sign Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven, a deal that left many surprised given that it was widely reported that Manchester United were his most likely next destination.

It is believed the 23-year-old will pen a six-year contract at Anfield following an impressive display at the World Cup in Qatar, where he scored three times in five games, while he has also scored nine goals and provided 12 assists in just 14 Eredivisie matches this season.

With the Dutchman poised for an arrival in England, Liverpool are now said to be keen to make another signing in the coming window.

According to Soccernet, Jurgen Klopp's side is preparing an official bid for Nigeria international Samuel Chukwueze.

The Villarreal winger would join Liverpool as a back-up to Mohamed Salah on the right flank, per Spanish outlet Fichajes, but it is not clear yet whether or not the player himself would be keen to play second fiddle to the Egyptian in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old will be out of contract with his LaLiga club in June 2024, and it is said that Villarreal have a €50 million (R917 million) asking price for his services.

There is believed to be competition for his signature, though, with new Aston Villa boss Unai Emery wanting to reunite with the Super Eagles star at Villa Park, while Arsenal, Everton, and West Ham United have also been credited with an interest in the player.
