Real's title charge halted by Villarreal loss

Real Madrid suffered their second defeat of the LaLiga season after going down 2-1 to Villarreal on Saturday evening.

Aurelien Tchouameni and Eder Militao were the only survivors from Real's win over Cacereno in the Copa del Rey during the course of the week.

It was a strong start by the Yellow Submarine after a back-heel by Francis Coquelin from Gerard Moreno's free-kick beat goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois before finding the post.

Ahead of the half-hour mark, Los Blancos again worked the host to concede another chance in which Karim Benzema set Militao clear only for Moreno to step in and deny the Brazilian a shot.

Villarreal got a huge chance minute afterwards as Moreno's through ball put Yeremy Pino level with Courtois before the Belgium made himself big and smothered.

Los Blancos trailed two minutes into the second half when Pino brought a lay-off from Moreno in his grasp from inside left and tucked beyond Courtois, with Ferland Mendy unable to stop the ball rolling over.

Madrid levelled just over 12 minutes inside the resumption after Karim Benzema fired in from the penalty spot as Juan Foyth was said to have handled according to the pitch-side review.

Foyth revived his fortunes within minutes as he forced David Alaba to fall in the area and touch the ball with his arm to give away a penalty, which Moreno executed to make it 2-1.

Real looked to the bench in order to change their fortunes and in came Rodrygo for Mendy before Tchouameni went out for Lucas Vazquez.

Los Blancos suddenly had a spring in their step following the introduction as Rodrygo steered a telling cross from Federico Valverde across the face of goal.

The Yellow Submarine, though, enjoyed all the late openings with Samuel Chukwueze and substitute Arnaut Danjuma, who with the net gaping. slotted wide as Courtois had committed for a corner.

However, the host were able to hold out in the remaining seconds of the match and bagged the win over the title holders.
