World Cup star 'accepts' offer to join Man Utd

A 2022 FIFA World Cup star has reportedly accepted an offer to join Premier League giants Manchester United on a short-term deal.

United are widely known to be seeking attacking reinforcements following the untimely departure of striker Cristiano Ronaldo in November.

Although the five-time Ballon d'Or winner spent his last few months at Old Trafford serving as a fringe player, it is understood that the club is serious about finding a replacement, having previously pursued Netherlands international Cody Gakpo, who eventually opted to join Liverpool instead.

The Red Devils have been linked with several attackers as a result, including the LaLiga duo of Joao Felix and Memphis Depay.

However, with the Atletico Madrid forward expected to cost a huge fee thought to be beyond United's means currently, Erik ten Hag's side are now believed to be edging closer to signing another Dutchman, and it is not Depay.

According to EuroFoot, Netherlands star Wout Weghorst has accepted an offer to join the Premier League giants following his impressive displays at the World Cup in Qatar.

With the 30-year-old currently out on loan at Besiktas from parent club Burnley, however, it is understood his representatives will meet the Turkish outfit on Monday to request a mutual termination of his interim contract in order for him to sign for the Red Devils instead.

Per Sky Sports, Besiktas sporting director Ceyhun Kazanci has insisted that any deal will only happen if the club is properly compensated, thus a failure to do so will see Weghorst remain with them for the remainder of the campaign.

There have also been rumours that there is an exit clause in the forward's deal with Besiktas, but the Super Lig put out a statement on Monday afternoon denying such a clause exists.

"After the match of our Football A Team against Kasimpasa in the Super League, there was a need to make a statement due to speculative news in the media about our football player Wout Weghorst," it read

"The claim that there is an exit clause in our football player's contract, stating that his contract can be terminated with a compensation of 2.5 million euros in case of an offer from the Premier League, is fictitious.

"However, the news that the player in question will leave the team on Tuesday is completely untrue. The initiative regarding Wout Weghorst belongs entirely to Besiktas Gymnastics Club.

"We also state that if there is a development on this issue, our esteemed community and the public will be informed."

After the marksman netted the winner in Besiktas' 2-1 win over Kasimpasa on the weekend, his current manager Senol Gunes also refused to rule out his potential exit.

"Weghorst is an important player for us. It is not enough to say goodbye to the audience. He also needs to talk to the club," the Turkish tactician said in a post-match interview.

"I have heard of such a development, but it is not clear.

"I'll consider [him] leaving after I talk to both him and the club."
