Real advance to Copa last eight with comeback victory

Real Madrid advanced to the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Villarreal on Thursday night.

Brazilian Rodrygo and Nacho Fernandez were recalled after the loss to FC Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana final on Sunday, with Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal dropped.

Villarreal were ahead after Etienne Capoue drilled home a flick-on from Gerard Moreno following a throw-in beyond the reach of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Moreno was involved again as he led a counter-attack to set-up Samuel Chukwueze to double their advantage ahead of halftime.

Los Blancos cut the lead to a single margin earlier in the second half courtesy of a composed finish by Vinicius Junior following Dani Ceballos' delivery.

Vinicius' compatriot Eder Militao pulled the visitors on level terms around the middle of the second half with an instinctive finish from close-range.

Madrid ensured the comeback in the final four minutes of the match when Ceballos opened a yard space on the edge of the area and applied a first-time finish to send his side in the last eight.

FC Barcelona continued their winning momentum after thumping AD Ceuta 5-0 to join Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey.

Pedri and Gavi, who starred in the Supercopa de Espana final, started on the bench along with Ousmane Dembele and Ansu Fati.

It took the Catalans a while to get settled as Raphinha brought a pass from Franck Kessie under control and curled into the far corner of the net later on in the first period.

Kessie instituted another opening for the visitors minutes in the second half when he attacked a stray pass and set-up Robert Lewandowski to make it 2-0.

With Fati introduced, the young forward bagged Barcelona's third goal after charging on the end of a delivery from Jordi Alba and slotted home from around the home side's defence.

Barcelona were now in total control as the minutes ticked away and thus Kessie got in on the act when he escaped a challenge before attacking Raphinha's cross for an easy header.

The Blaugrana bagged the fifth goal in added time after Lewandowksi collected defender Eric Garcia's well-weighted pass and applied a composed finish to bring the encounter to a close.
