What is the true value of Sundowns’ loan players?

The latest transfer window which closed on Tuesday came with yet another line of loan movements for Mamelodi Sundowns players sent out to other clubs.

Out of favour goalkeeper Jody February went out on loan to AmaZulu with the hope of getting game time in the coast.

The exact number of players that the champions have out on loan is misty but includes Lyle Lakay – Cape Town City, Divine Lunga – Golden Arrows, Sammy Seabi – Sekhukhune United

Ricardo Goss, Grant Margeman, Thabang Sibanyoni – all SuperSport United, Etiosa Godspower Ighodaro – Chippa United, Siphesihle Mkhize – Chippa United and Siyanda Msani – Richards Bay, and Ismail Watenga – Marumo Gallants, Nicholus Lukhubeni – Swallows FC.

Several other names who have never played for Sundowns are said to be in their books but on loan at other DStv Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship clubs.

For so long the issue of continuous mass loaning out of players by the monied clubs has been a concern with the FIFA Council adopting new regulations last year aimed at limiting the number of loan signings a club can make in a bid to foster player development and prevent hoarding of players.

The new rules aim to ultimately have international loan signings trimmed down to six after two years.

However, at the domestic level, FIFA's member associations have been granted until 2025 to implement rules for a loan system that is in line with the principles established at the international level.

This is according to FIFA who aim to have a limitation on a club's number of loans per season.

For now, Sundowns remain within their rights to loan as many players as they want on the domestic scene.
