Misfiring Chelsea fail to strengthen top four hopes

Chelsea failed to strengthen their top-four chances in the Premier League following a goalless draw against Fulham on Friday evening.

Deadline day signing Enzo Fernandez was thrown straight into the Blues' line-up, Hakim Ziyech also started despite his failed move to Paris Saint-Germain this week.

After an even opening, the Cottagers were the closest to going ahead when Andreas Pereira stung the gloves of Kepa Arrizabalaga with a powerful first-time shot from outside the area.

Germany international Kai Havertz got a huge chance just after the half-hour mark from a cutback on the left of the area though the forward went high and wide of target.

The Blues enjoyed a strong end to the first half where Havertz latched onto a pass over the top and lobbed the on-rushing Bernd Leno, but the ball crashed against the upright.

Chelsea, who made a number of big transfer sales recently, replaced Mykhailo Mudryk for the services of another new acquisition Noni Madueke.

However, the Cottagers could've made their presence count following a slow spell with a first-time shot from a tight angle off superb work by Willian but the shot flew over Leno's goal.

Fernandez's first sight to goal came late in the second half after finding space outside the area, but the Argentine's snap-shot sailed just wide of target.

Chelsea issued yet another scare minutes ahead of time when David Fofana ran in from a tight angle following a loose pass and rounded Leaner before having his shot cleared off the line.

Both teams got chances in the closing seconds, but the deadlock proved elusive and goalless it finished, with the Blues up to ninth and Fulham in sixth spot on the table.
