Rulani: 'I told him to walk barefooted'

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has explained why he has advised Cassius Mailula and some of the club's players to walk barefooted.

Mailula delivered a Man of the Match award-winning performance on Sunday as The Brazilians defeated Orlando Pirates 1-0 at the Orlando Stadium on Soweto.

The goal was the striker's tenth of the season in addition to his three assists across all competitions in just 16 appearances for The Brazilians.

When quizzed on what advice Mokwena has offered the starlet to keep his focus away from media spotlight, the 36-year-old coach revealed that he had advised Mailula and some of The Brazilians' players to walk barefooted.

"I just tell him [Mailula] to walk barefooted," Mokwena responded.

"Like I tell most of my players – no, serious talk - I tell them to take their shoes off and walk barefooted a lot. I do it myself. I do a lot of barefooted walking. It helps with grounding and it's important.

"It's part of my routine and it's the advice I give to a lot of my players; that they must walk barefooted. It's true.

Mokwena went on to explain that it was advice given to him by a psychologist, that he's passed on to his players. Many studies exist on the health and psychological benefits of 'grounding' or sometimes referred to as 'earthing'.

"It [walking barefooted] keeps you extremely grounded and keeps you connected," added Mokwena.

Meanwhile, Sundowns enjoy a 23-point lead at the summit of the DStv Premiership table but will now turn their focus to their first hurdle on the road to defending the Nedbank Cup title, with a clash against Richards Bay on Tuesday.
