Rwandan second division side La Jeunesse suffered a 1-0 defeat to AS Muhanga on Friday, 3 March.

In the tense tie, La Jeunesse had a goal ruled out for offside after it was flagged by assistant referee Pacifique Ruhumuriza.

This decision is said to have enraged goalscorer Saidi Nshimiye, who proceeded to kick the match official, earning himself a straight red card.

According to Times Sport, once the final whistle had gone at the end of the match, La Jeunesse stars and coaches rushed on to the pitch and attacked Ruhumuriza.

Fourth official Toni Karemera ran to his colleague's defence, but he also ended up being beaten and injured.

Police spokesperson Emmanuel Habiyaremye has confirmed that two La Jeunesse players were arrested and are in custody, detained at Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) Nyamabuye station.

"They are charged with assault," the police chief told Times Sport.

"The suspects' case files are being prepared to be transferred to the prosecution."

It is said the RIB is looking for more suspects who may have played a part in the shocking incident.
