Newcastle get revenge on Man Utd in top 4 race

Newcastle United leapfrogged Manchester United into third spot on the Premier League table after securing a 2-0 win on Sunday evening.

Red Devils coach Erik ten Hag made two changes from the FA Cup win over Fulham before the international break as Marcel Sabitzer and Scott McTominay replaced Casemiro and Fred in midfield.

The visitors carved out a meaningful chance just after 12 minutes when Wout Weghorst was slipped down the right side of the box by Antony, but the Dutch striker only found the side-netting.

Newcastle should have opened the scoring a few minutes later when Keiran Trippier's cross found Alekander Isak, who saw his close-range header turned away by goalkeeper David de Gea.

While the Red Devils struggled to carve out chances, the hosts should have went ahead five minutes before the break when Allan Saint-Maximin's pass found Joe Wilock, who blazed over the crossbar.

The visitors failed to register an effort at Nick Pope's goal in the entire first half, as top scorer Marcus Rashford barely had any room to make an impact.

It was more of the same in the seocnd half, with Ten Hag eventually withdrawing Wout Weghorst and Antony for Jadon Sancho and the returning Anthony Martial.

However, it was the home side who got the breakthrough on 66 minutes when Wilock headed into an empty net from Saint-Maximin's knockdown after a well-worked passing move.

The woodwork came to the Red Devils' rescue with 15 minutes to go as De Gea tipped Joelinton's header onto the crossbar, before Fabian Schar's header crashed against the post.

Newcastle got their reward in the 88th minute when Callum Wilson, who replaced Isak, ended his goal drought by nodding home Kieran Trippier's free-kick.
