Injury-hit Man Utd sink Forest to move third

Manchester United jumped to third spot on the Premier League table after defeating Nottingham Forest 2-0 on Sunday at the City Ground.

With United by injuries, Erik ten Hag recalled Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Diogo Dalot and Christian Eriksen after the UEFA Europa league clash on Thursday evening.

Despite the injury troubles, the Red Devils went close to breaking the deadlock inside five minutes through Jadon Sancho, who saw his low strike cleared away by Filipe's boot.

The visitors carved out another chance in the 17th minute when a swift counter attack ended with the ball falling to Fernandes, who saw his volley turned away by goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

The home side were frustrated by the woodwork just under ten minutes later when defender Scott McKenna deflected a corner onto the upright before United were able to clear.

Forest's defence was breached on 32 minutes through Antony's close-range finish after Navas could only parry Anthony Martial's shot into the path of the Brazilian.

Navas came to Forest's rescue shortly after the break with a superb save to push Fernandes' first-time strike onto the woodwork as United pushed for a second goal.

United have been two goals to the good with 20 minutes left on the clock when Casemiro's superb cross found Martial at the far post, but the Frenchman headed from six yards.

The visitors did get their reward in the 76th minute when Antony delightfully played in Dalot in the box and the Portuguese made no mistake from close range with his first-ever league goal.

United did go in search of more goals in the latter stages through Antony and Fernandes, but 2-0 was how the encounter ended as Ten Hag and his troops switch focus to the Europa League on Thursday.
