Khune opens up on contract talks

Kaizer Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has provided an update on contract negotiations, with his current deal set to expire at the end of June.

After making just one appearance last season, a rejuvenated Khune returned to action under Arthur Zwane's tenure and has featured 12 times this season for the Glamour Boys.

However, the 35-year-old is the among several players at Chiefs whose contracts are set to expire. Khune has provided the latest update around the possibility of extending his stay at Naturena.

"It will depend on what the club thinks at that time, the contract is coming to an end but what's more important is what I offer on a daily basis, and the club will reward me based on that," Khune said on Marawa Sports World.

"So if the club feels that: 'Itu we have had enough, thank you for your service,' then if we have to part ways, then we will. That will be the club's decision.

"If the club says: 'Itu we would like to keep you but in a different position, I will still gladly appreciate what the club has done for me.

"If I have to go coach [offered a coaching position], I will sit down with my wife, discuss and see if I still have it in my legs, so there's a lot that we are going to discuss."

Zwane has previously insisted that all contract negotiations would be discussed with the players concerned at the end of the season.

"So right now, we haven't started negotiating," added Khune.

"What's more important is to finish the season on a high. That's my main focus and the club has also given me that space to say: 'compete and play as many games as you and then when the time is right, we will call you.'"

"It's not the first time this has happened, and I've respected the club's position and they've also give me the space and time to focus on what I have to do on the field which is training good, being a good leader, leading the team."

Khune and Co take on rivals Orlando Pirates in the semi-final of the Nedbank Cup on Saturday at FNB Stadium.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
