WATCH | Sheppard explains where it went wrong for Chiefs

Assistant coach Dillon Sheppard has explained where it went wrong for Kaizer Chiefs in a 1-0 defeat to SuperSport United at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys suffered a third consecutive defeat across all competitions to Matsatsantsa thanks to a first-half strike by Gamphani Lungu.

The defeat was the eleventh for Zwane's side this season - the highest number of losses the club has ever registered in a single season.

"Technically, we weren't able to open up the passing lines into deeper areas and then our support play coming from there we weren't effective in affecting in the second line," Sheppard said.

"Yes, [the result is] disappointing you know, when you see our position and SuperSport's [position], we needed the three points to put ourselves really in a good position to push for third place.

"But yes, you can't reply energy in the second half, [we] created half-chances here and there but performance-wise, not good enough from our side.

"Like I said, we created a couple of chances, but not near enough to hurt SuperSport."

The loss effectively means Chiefs are out of the race for second place to secure CAF Champions League spot, with that race now falling between Orlando Pirates and SuperSport.

Chiefs will also not be able to finish third and are only left with a fourth spot to fight for against fifth-placed Cape Town City.

Amakhosi will host the Citizens at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
