Another EPL giant 'on verge' of big-money takeover

With Manchester United currently up for sale, another Premier League giant is now reportedly set for a big-money takeover.

Takeovers have become an increasingly familiar feature in the English top flight, with Newcastle United, Chelsea and newly-relegated Southampton having been sold to new owners in the past two years.

In late 2022, it was also reported that Liverpool were looking for new investment into the club, but their current owners, the Fenway Sports Group, later denied they were looking to sell the team completely.

It is no secret United have been placed on the market by the Glazer family, with Qatari statesman Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani and British tycoon Sir Jim Ratcliffe in an ongoing bidding war for the Red Devils. 

With Chelsea having been sold to a Todd Boehly-led US consortium in 2022, another American investment group is now reportedly set to get their hands on an iconic English team.

According to the Daily Mail, relegation-threatened Everton, who have been in England's top division for more than 65 years, are close to being sold in a deal worth about £600 million (R14.4 billion), with the prospective buyers said to be US investment fund 777 Partners.

The sale wwill bring an end to Farhad Moshiri's polarising reign after he purchased the team in 2016. Since then, the British-Iranian billionaire has spent almost £700 million (R16.9 billion) on transfers, while the Merseyside outfit has had eight permanent managers in that time, according to The Athletic.

Everton are said to be keen to get the deal done as soon as possible, with 777 Partners understood to be demanding a guarantee that the side secures Premier League football next season  the Toffees are currently one point off the relegation spots with two crucial games, against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth, left to play. 

A rival bidder, MSP Sports Capital, are said to be second favourites to buy the club, with the conditions of sale likely to include the completion of Everton's new £505 million (R12.2 billion) stadium at Bramley Dock.
