'Why would we go out early?' - Percy Tau confident of Bafana's Afcon chances

Star attacker Percy Tau believes Bafana Bafana are well capable of emerging as serious contenders for next year's Africa Cup of Nations after a morale-boosting win over Morocco.

The 1996 Afcon champions successfully booked their seat at the 2023 Afcon with a 2-1 win over Liberia in March and finished top of Group K with another 2-1 win over Morocco on Saturday night.

Morocco head coach Hoalid Regragui said Bafana could be the 'surprise package' at the Afcon, to be held in Cote D'Ivoire and Tau shares the same sentiments.

Although the team failed to qualify for the 2021 edition of the Afcon, Tau believes Hugo Broos' Bafana can match and even better the 2019 Afcon run, where Shakes Mashaba's Bafana knocked out host nation Egypt in the last 16 of the 2019 Afcon but could not progress past Nigeria in the quarter-final stage.

"We'll do better, we'll do better at that one [next Afcon]," Tau said.

"We don't have to limit ourselves, the team is growing and we have to be confident."

The team is growing, if we can spend even more time together, we'll even get a better [finishing] position than what we did in Egypt."

"I want to go as far as possible [in the tournament] because believe that the guys also want to do that. I mean why would we go out early? we have a team guys, we have a team, we will get the results, don't worry."

Bafana are set to play friendlies in September in preparations for the Afcon which will take place in January.
