A top Brazilian government official has confirmed that Neymar now faces the risk a hefty $1 million (R18.3 million) fine.
The Paris Saint-Germain star has been the subject of controversy in recent times, having publicly apologised to his girlfriend earlier this week for cheating on her while she is pregnant.

The drama around the player does not seem to stop there, though, as he now faces a hefty punishment from a local mayor's office in Brazil due to several violations and damages relating to the construction of his mansion in the coastal town of Mangaratiba, near Rio de Janeiro.
The property, a 2.5-acre plot that includes a spa and helipad, is said to have been acquired by the player in 2016, and the state has received numerous complaints from residents over a number of issues, including the removal of beach sand and rocks without a permit, and the diverting of waterways.
Work on the property has since been shut down, and the mayor has now threatened serious punishment for the player once his office concludes their investigation into the matter.
"The next step will be to make an assessment of the irregularities found and issue a fine which, according to estimates and in view of the environmental damage caused, will not be less than five million reais [about $1 million]," the local mayor's office said in a statement, according to Goal.
The PSG forward's father, Neymar da Silva Santos, was present on site during the inspections and seen on camera in a heated exchange with local officials.

It is said he was threatened with arrest but was ultimately not detained, with a report by UOL Esporte claiming that Neymar Sr was handed an £822 000 (R19.5 million) fine for his involvement in overseeing the work carried out on the property.
