Second-String Banyana thrashed in choatic send-off

A much-changed Banyana Banyana outfit lost 5-0 to Botswana in an international friendly after players from the World Cup squad refused to play on Sunday evening.

The players heading for the World Cup did not take part in international friendly, as reports claimed that players remained at the hotel in protest against the playing conditions at the Tsakane Stadium.

The Botswana national side were quite dominant through the encounter and managed to take a two-goal lead in the opening 15 minutes through Lesego Radiakanyo and Ontlametse Goanyadiwe. Goanyadiwe added her second and Botswana's third goal in the 24th minute, before Refilwe Tholakele capped off a dominant half by netting the fourth goal on the day.

As for Banyana, they were unable to carve out any clear-cut openings and failed to register a shot on target in an opening 45 minutes where they were chasing shadows.

There was a fifth goal added in the second half, with Tholakele completing her brace in the final 12 minutes to round off a big day for Botswana and an embarrassing one for South African football.

The World Cup-bound players did show up at the Tsakane Stadium, while SAFA president Danny Jordaan was also in attendance as the second-string Banyana side conceded five goals in front of a lively crowed.

Banyana will now turn their attention to a final warm-up clash against Costa Rica, before their opening game at the FIFA Women's World Cup against Sweden on 23 July.
