‘Steve didn’t want to be a ball-boy at Sundowns'

Steve Komphela's decision to leave Mamelodi Sundowns to take over Swallows FC has been hailed as a brave move that aligns to his personality of being a top coach.

Komphela has been at Sundowns since October 2020 working essentially as an assistant though the terminology used to describe his job was senior coach before becoming first team coach nine months ago.

Through his time at Chloorkop, Komphela has won the league thrice and added the Nedbank Cup and MTN8.

"I don't think it was right for a personality like Steve to sit on the bench as an assistant," argues veteran coach Walter Rautmann.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - NOVEMBER 12: Manqoba

"Steve is rightfully a head coach that shouldn't be wasted as an assistant regardless of what he was earning at Sundowns.

"Maybe, he now realises that he needs to be his own man and Swallows is a good job even though the management there doesn't look right.

"At Sundowns, he was being wasted as an assistant.

"Steve didn't want to be a ball boy at Sundowns because he is a man that has coached Kaizer Chiefs and captained Bafana Bafana.

LOS ANGELES, USA - 6 July 2005, Steve Komphela spe

"If you have worked as a head coach before it doesn't make sense that you are then relegated to become an assistant.

"I would have never accepted working as an assistant to another coach because it is terrible for your personality.

"As an assistant, it is either the head coach can fear that you will interfere or that the assistant wants to take over from the head coach.

"An assistant should always be someone young and learning and not a top coach.

"The problem is that some these guys are just greedy for money.

"At Sundowns, we all know that you earn big money and some of them are just ball boys filling up team sheets.

"Maybe with some of these guys like Manqoba they don't like taking pressure because if you are the head coach at a club you will have pressure.

"The pressure is always only on the head coach and as an assistant you get an easy ride.

"At Sundowns they had an easy life just attending training to watch and then sitting comfortably on the bench to earn big money.

"Maybe Manqoba has more interest in money than coaching.

"Otherwise, he wouldn't have been at Sundowns this long just to sit on the bench.

"They should have left much earlier to run other clubs," says Rautmann.
