The 61-year-old's arrival comes almost three months after the club sacked Rudi Garcia after his side slipped up on winning the title despite having been top of the table in January.
According to various reports, the tactician's appointment comes after he was recommended to the club hierarchy by captain Ronaldo.
Castro, whose career spans 26 years to date, is said to share the same admiration for the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, who was actively involved in his hiring.
Back in 2020, when Castro was in charge of Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk, he questioned Real Madrid's decision to let the forward depart for Juventus in 2018, according to the Daily Express.
Castro said: "When we talk about Real, it's Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Marco Asensio, Vinicius Jr, Sergio Ramos – a great team!
"When you have Cristiano you should never let him go. Never! We are talking about the best, the most effective footballer in the world, a working machine."
Castro, who won the 2021/22 Emir of Qatar Cup with Al-Duhail, is thought to have beaten out competition from his countryman and former Wolverhampton Wanderers coach Bruno Lage.
Al Nassr also recently signed Croatian superstar Marcelo Brozovic from Inter Milan in a deal worth €18 million (R371 million).
