My welcome to the league moment - Vukile Mngqibisa

In our exciting feature, My welcome to the league moment, KickOff catches up with former Polokwane City defender Vukile Mngqibisa.

"What shocked me was the way the ball was moved compared to in the townships.

"In the townships, you take your time on the ball, you build from the back always, whereas in the PSL, it's different in they want to attack you from the word go.

"That's what made me realise I was now playing in the big leagues. My first game was against Maritzburg.

"And that time Polokwane City just got promoted, we didn't even have enough substitutes on the bench.

"The tempo was so high, and Maritzburg United kept coming at us. Everything was happening quick, and fast.

"That's when I realised for me to survive I had to man up. I was so scared. I didn't want to make a mistake.

"Especially as a defender, every mistake you make costs the club three points.

"Mame Niang and Dikgang Mabalane caused me problems. Mame Niang was tall.

"Almost the same height as me. And when you are tall, everybody has the perception that you are good with your head.

"But unfortunately, with me, it was not the case. I had not yet mastered the technique of heading the ball.

"And remember, other teams are smart, when you play them away, they pump the balls to make them very hard. After heading that ball, you see stars.

"So, Mame Niang mastered this heading thing, he would hit you with elbows and whatsoever.

"Every time he beat me for a ball in the air he'd say, you weak! One-nil boy!

"I remember him out jumping me, and his header hit the crossbar and went out.

"After that, he looked at me and said, 'I'm coming again.' And that time the game was only five minutes old.

"I looked at our bench, and every member of the technical team was shouting at me.

"Then there was Dikgang Mabalane. I remember Polokwane City playing against Pirates. I remember prior to the game, our left-back coming to me and saying 'hey man, Pirates have Dikgang Mabalane in their starting line-up,'

"I said to him, so what? He replied 'Man that guy can run. Immediately Dikgang receives the ball, please man don't wait for me to call you, you must immediately leave your position and cover me because I know he will leave me lying on the floor. I will not be able to match his pace."
