There were reports that the Croatia international had already agreed personal terms with the reigning UEFA Champions League holders and only an agreement between the two clubs are needed.

The Daily Mail have reported that Leipzig have given the Citizens till 12 August 2023 to sort out a deal for the 21-year-old defender.

The English publication adds that DFB Pokal-winning side want their squad 'settled' before the German Super Cup clash against Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Leipzig have no pressure to sell Gvardiol in this current transfer window as the defender's contract only expires in 2027 but they would need to find a replacement if he is sold.

Club director Max Eberl also added the club are not in any financial trouble that would force their hand with regards to a potential sale for the Croatian.

"Financially we are fine. We have sold big and we have done good incoming deals," Eberl said, as per the Mirror.

"We have done 16 transfers in total and our 29-man squad is perfect if Gvardiol stays."
