In our exciting feature How I Became Goalkeeper, former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Thabang Stemmer the interesting story of how he ended up as a shot-stopper.
The retired 44-year-old represented Bloemfontein Celtic and Black Leopards, while winning the PSL with SuperSport United in the 2007/08 season and also participated in the Gold Cup with South Africa in 2005.
"I started as an outfield player, at our amateur team in 2007 and nobody wanted to stand in goals.
"Everyone wanted to score goals, everyone wanted to be a Doctor Khumalo.
"I decided to stand in goals, I enjoyed myself that day. I did some wonderful saves.
"Innocent 'Ayoba-Yo' Mayoyo is a goalkeeper I looked up to where I even went to the stadium just to watch him play. You wouldn't dare miss his games, even on television.
"Diepkloof is closer to Orlando Stadium, and funny enough, my grandfather was a Kaizer Chiefs supporter. I still remember watching with him a game where Chiefs defender Paul Motaung scored with his knee.
"I spent the entire day watching Mayoyo, the way he was confident, the saves he made. Instead of watching the Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Gary Bailey, I was focusing on Mayoyo.
"His style of stopping a shot with his chest was copied by every goalkeeper in the country back then.
"After Mayoyo, I watched William Okpara who took it to another level. Brian Baloyi, also I used to watch him."
Who are some of the goalkeepers today, who are your favourites?
"Abroad, I'm a big fan of Thibaut Courtois, I'm a big fan of Real Madrid. I like the way he managed to transform himself into a modern goalkeeper.
"He can play with his feet, he can build-up play, he can be a sweeper keeper, he adopted the new trends.
"Here at home, there are a lot of goalkeepers that I enjoy watching, they have taken the goalkeeping to another level these boys.
"Ronwen Williams and Sipho Chaine are the ones I enjoy watching the most. I'm a goalkeeper coach now and I always tell my goalkeepers to watch these two closely to get a good idea about modern goalkeeping."
"Gone are the days where goalkeepers can only rely on their hands, they need to use their feet as well.
"You need to be a sweeper keeper and create goalscoring opportunities for your teammates."
