'People must not be fooled' - Rulani clarifies Saavedra situation

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has explained the absence of midfielder Erwin Saavedra.

The 27-year-old has struggled to nail down a starting role at Sundowns and his notable absence from the team had fueled further reports of a move away from Chloorkop.

However, Mokwena has explained that the Bolivian international is recovering from surgery in his home country at his own request.

"Saavedra is still in Bolivia, he had to undergo surgery and so with his rehabilitation he had asked that we (Sundowns) allow him to do his rehabilitation in his home country with some experts from Argentina that were recommended to him by his former colleagues and national team colleagues," Mokwena said on PowerFM.

"So, we've done that and he'll be back soon so that he can complete the last phase of his rehabilitation and then we'll take it from there with regards to Saavedra.

"He's very good player, a very very good player people shouldn't be fooled, he is a player that is worth the investment that we are making."

Meanwhile, Sundowns have had a perfect start to the 2023/23 season with five wins from five matches across all competitions. Up next for the Brazilians is a DStv Premiership clash against Polokwane City on Wednesday.

Kick off is at 17:00.
