France & Netherlands cruise to EURO qualifying victories

France 2-0 Republic of Ireland

France continued their perfect start in the Euro 2024 qualifiers with a 2-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in Group B at the Parc des Princes on Thursday night.

The FIFA World Cup finalists set veteran Olivier Giroud up top and flanked captain Kylian Mbappe out wide along with Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann.

Giroud was removed minutes after the start when he couldn't carry on playing and was replaced by Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram.

Les Blues wasted no time to get the ball rolling as Aurelien Tchouameni thundered in a miraculous strike that beat Gavin Bazunu hands down to open the deadlock.

France extended their tally over two minutes in the second half through a fine finish from Thuram after a well-constructed move and opened his account for his nation.

Netherlands 3-0 Greece

Netherlands kept their qualification hopes alive following a comprehensive 3-0 drubbing over Greece at the Phillips Stadion in Eindhoven.

Defender Marten de Roon made the breakthrough early on before Liverpool's Cody Gakpo doubled the lead a little after the half-hour mark with a smart finish.

It continued to rain goals for the Oranje as forward Wout Weghorst made it three a little to the halftime period and left the Greeks needing a mountain to climb to overturn the tally.

However, the Dutch were able to survive the remaining phases of play and in the end picked up a comprehensive victory to revive their qualification aspirations.

Poland 2-0 Faroe Islands

Poland needed a late surge to see off the Faroe Islands a 2-0 victory in Group E to brighten up their qualification campaign once again.

FC Barcelona striker and talisman Robert Lewandowski came to his nation's rescue with the opener from the penalty spot minutes before the end of the clash.

Lewandowski was at it again and bagged a brace in the matter minutes to see the Poles to a victory that revives their campaign.

Denmark 4-0 San Marino

A clinical Denmark showed a spineless San Marino no mercy with a 4-0 hammering in Group H and restored their ambitions to qualify for the tournament proper.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre Emile Hojbjerg put the host nation in front early in the second half before Jaemi Maehle made two just ahead of the half-hour mark.

Denmark continued to run riot around halftime and had Jonas Wind found a perfectly weighted ball from Christian Eriksen to give them a third goal.

The hapless San Marino remained pointless and without a win at the basement of the group, while the Danes surged into second spot ahead of Slovenia.
