Man City rally back to avoid surprise UCL loss

Manchester City 3-1 Red Star Belgrade

Holders Manchester City secured a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Red Star Belgrade in their UEFA Champions League opener on Tuesday night.

Man City manager Pep Guardiola did not tamper with the attack of Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Alvarez and Erling Haaland from their Premier League win over West Ham United.

The Citizens created chances early on on 25 minutes Haaland was denied the opener by the crossbar and ten minutes later missed a sitter, as he lifted his shot over the top.

Red Star, who were largely defending, took a surprise lead on the stroke of half-time after Osman Bukari went through on goal and beat goalkeeper Ederson in a one-on-one. Bukari's goal was initially ruled out for offside but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) allowed the goal.

Alvarez levelled matters for City just after the interval after he went through on goal and rounded goalkeeper Omri Glazer to score into an empty net.

Alvarez gave the Citizens the lead and got his brace on the hour-mark with a free-kick that was fumbled by Glazer, who could not get a clear punch to the ball.

Rodri put the game to bed for Guardiola's men on 73 minutes with a curling strike beyond the dive of Glazer.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Borussia Dortmund

Paris Saint-Germain enjoyed a winning start in Group F after defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Parc des Princes.

PSG were boosted by the return of captain Marquinhos alongside Randal Kolo Muani, who joined Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele in a three-pronged attack, following their loss against Nice.

Luis Enrique's charges were on the front foot as with 19 minutes gone, Vitinha was denied the opener by the crossbar with a strike in the box.

The Parisians had a penalty claim just before the break after a ball hit Niklas Sule's arm in the box but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) committee was not persuaded.

In a strange turn of events, PSG were eventually awarded a spot-kick just after the break after Mbappe's shot hit Sule's arm in the box and this time the VAR agreed confirmed that it was penalty.

Mbappe broke the deadlock for the hosts with a low powerful shot into the bottom corner from 12-yards.

Achraf Hakimi doubled the lead for the Parisians just before the hour-mark with a strike in the box after exchanging passes with Vitinha.

Barcelona 5-0 Antwerp

Barcelona started their Group H campaign on a high note after crushing Antwerp 5-0 with Joao Felix scoring twice at Estadio Olímpico.

Barca manager Xavi recalled Raphinha and Ilkay Gundogan as two changes following their big win over Real Betis.

Joao Felix gave Blaugrana the lead just 11 minutes into the encounter with a drilled strike in the box after he was setup by Gundogan.

Robert Lewandowski doubled the lead for the hosts eight minutes later with a volley at the back post after a lofted pass by Felix.

The Catalans were 3-0 up midway through the first stanza after Jelle Bataille deflected Raphinha's cross into his own net, in off the post.

Blaugrana ran riot as Gavi made it 4-0 early in the second with a strike from a rebound in the box.

Felix made it 5-0 for Xavi's troops and got his brace on 66 minutes with a header from a cross by Raphinha.

Lazio 1-1 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid conceded deep in stoppage time as they were denied maximum points by Lazio in their Group E opener at Stadio Olimpico.

Pablo Barrios broke the deadlock for Atletico on the half-hour mark with a deflected shot from range.

However, Ivan Provedel snatched the equaliser for Lazio in virtually the last kick of the game in stoppage time.

Shakhtar Donetsk  1-3 FC Porto

Porto had a winning start in Group G after thrashing Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 courtesy of a brace by Galeno at Volksparkstadion.

Galeno gave Porto the early lead within eight minutes but Kevin Kelsy quickly levelled matters for Shakhtar five minutes later.

Galeno restored the lead for the Portuguese giants almost immediately and grabbed his brace.

Mehdi Taremi gave the visitors a two-goal cushion on the half-hour mark.

Feyenoord 2-0 Celtic

Nine-man Celtic started their Champions League campaign in Group E with a2-0 defeat to Feyenoord at De Kuip.

Calvin Stengs broke the deadlock for Feyenoord on the stroke of half-time.

Celtic were down to ten men on 64 minutes after Gustaf Lagerbielke got his second booking and was sent off for a foul on Stengs, which also resulted into a penalty. Joe Hart kept Celtic in the game after he saved Igor Paixao's penalty.

However, the Scottish giants were down to nine men a couple of minutes later after Holm join Lagerbielke was red-carded for a high and reckless challenge on Mats Wieffer.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh eventually sealed the three points for Feyenoord with the second goal in the last 14 minutes.
