Messi groans at PSG: ‘I was the only one’

Lionel Messi has groaned at how Paris Saint-Germain reacted towards him after winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The 36-year-old endured a polarising two-season spell at PSG, as his struggles at the club have been well documented, while he has also been quite open about his eventful stint.

Towards the back end of his time at the Parc des Princes, it had already been apparent his relationship with the fans had soured as well. He was booed on several occasions post-World Cup, with the supporters questioning his commitment to the club.

His World Cup triumph over France in the final also seemed to have an effect on how he was perceived in the country, with reports after the tournament suggesting that the club were unsure about honouring him publicly given that it my upset the locals and his teammate Kylian Mbappe.

Messi has now insisted that he wasn't duly recognised for his historic achievement in Qatar.

Speaking in a recent interview with ESPN's Migue Granados; "I was the only player of the 25 that didn't get a [club] recognition.

"It was understandable... because of us [Argentina], they [France] didn't retain the World Cup," he then added.

Asked whether he would have liked not to have moved to Paris, Messi implied that he does not regret the transfer.

"It happened like that. It was not what I expected, but I always say things happen for a reason," he said.

"Even if I wasn't well there, it happened that I was world champion while I was there."
