CAF 'in talks' with FIFA over major AFCON change

CAF is now reportedly in talks with FIFA over making a major change to the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Barring a few exceptions, the AFCON has, in more recent history, traditionally been held in January and February, but African football's governing body has now revealed its inclination to host the 2025 edition of the competition over the period of June and July, according to Yallakora.

With AFCON 2023 set to take place in Ivory Coast between January and February next year, it has been confirmed that Morocco will host the contest in 2025.

CAF has now announced that it is looking to have the tournament be played during the off-season in two years' time, rather than in January and February.

However, FIFA is believed to be planning to run the Club World Cup in same period in 2025.

As a result, CAF vice-president Ahmed Ould Yahya has revealed that negotiations over the major date change for Africa's showpiece competition are ongoing in a bid to ensure the two tournaments do not clash.

"At the present time, our desire is to play the tournament in the summer," Yahya told Canal+ Sport

"We are aware that the Club World Cup will be held in June 2025, but there are already negotiations between CAF and FIFA to find a solution.

"We are looking for the interest of the African Cup of Nations and the interest of the tournament to be held in the summer, because this is the time when players are available after the end of the leagues, more than was the case in January."

With the tournament having previously caused a lot of club versus country arguments due to its traditional timing in the middle of the season for Europe's big five leagues, those teams are likely to welcome this news with open arms.
