The festivities are scheduled to kick off in Uruguay capital Montevideo to pay tribute to the first-ever FIFA World Cup, which took place there in 1930, with Argentina and Paraguay set to host matches too.
"The first of these three matches will, of course, be played at the stadium where it all began, in Montevideo's mythical Estadio Centenario, precisely to celebrate the centenary edition of the FIFA World Cup," FIFA president Gianni Infantino explained.
He added that the tournament being hosted by the various continents sends out a message of peace and unity.
"Two continents – Africa and Europe – united not only in a celebration of football but also in providing unique social and cultural cohesion. What a great message of peace, tolerance and inclusion."
Meanwhile, the bidding process for the 2034 edition of the world's showpiece football competition is also set to take place, with Saudi Arabia confirming their interest in hosting the event.
In a statement by the Saudi FA, the country revealed that this would be the next step in their footballing evolution.
"Hosting a FIFA World Cup in 2034 would help us achieve our dream of becoming a leading nation in world sport and would mark a significant milestone in the country's transformation," Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal said.
