Tinkler reveals secret behind revived Mayo

Head coach Eric Tinkler revealed several elements that have inspired attacker Khanyisa Mayo to rediscover his goalscoring form after being the match-winner in Cape Town City's 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday.

Mayo was the Premiership's joint-top scorer last season with 12 league goals under his belt. However, Mayo endured a frustrating start to the current season, falling to score in City's first six matches of the season.

Fortunately for the Western Cape-based outfit, the 25-year-old has come to life in recent matches, scoring three times in the The Citizens' last three four matches.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Tinkler has explained what he believes is behind his star player's rejuvenated form.

"I think his work ethic has improved immensely," Tinkler said.

"he is not reactive, which was his problem in the first couple of games, he was very reactive to what was happening around him, but now he is more active, sharp, aware of where he should be going.

"He's aware of the spaces he should be looking to occupy, he's gambling a bit more so I think that's the important thing, his work ethic is back to what it was before."

Earlier in the season, Tinkler had admitted that Mayo was off his game, with Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos even dropping the attacker for the national team.

"Mayo for the moment, I think there is a lack of confidence," Broos said at the start of September.

"I read something about his coach (Eric Tinkler) who said 'yes I have to give him some confidence because for the moment he doesin't have it.'

Mayo's resurgence may come in handy for City who were in desperate need of points and have since won two games on the bounce as their climb up to fifth on the table.
