Motsepe hints at cancellation of CAF comps amid AFL start

CAF president Dr. Patrice Motsepe has hinted there may be a cancellation of some of the institution's existing club competitions in light of the African Football League's inception.

The continent's newest flagship competition officially gets underway today as Simba SC and Al Ahly open the tournament's proceedings at the home of the Tanzanian giants, the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.

The AFL has now usurped the CAF Champions League as the most lucrative tournament on the continent, and while this may be an added incentive for participation, this is also the fourth official contest African football's governing body has going.

Coupled with the Champions League, CAF Confederations Cup, CAF Super Cup, league and domestic cup obligations, there is likely bound to be massive fixture congestion for those participating.

An example of that is in South Africa, with the Premier Soccer League initially pushing back on an extension of the league season in order to accommodate Mamelodi Sundowns' participation in the AFL.

That issue has since been resolved as the Tshwane outfit are now set to face Petro de Luanda in their quarter-final clash.

Motsepe has, however, stated that the Egypt-based institution will review the viability of some of their other tournaments.

"We want African football clubs to be profitable, we want them to be commercially viable," the 61-year-old football executive said, as per CAFTV.

"The African Football League is going to significantly improve the quality of the CAF Champions League and, of course, we will be reviewing all of the African competitions because we can't have too many competitions.

"You've got to have the appropriate number of competitions, that are globally competitive, have the right quality, huge amount of excitement amongst sponsors and spectators."
