Zim boss granted bail after COSAFA indecency scandal

The head coach of Zimbabwe women's national team has been granted bail after he was charged with indecently assaulting a female member of his technical staff during the COSAFA Women's Cup.

Shadreck Mlauzi has been granted bail of $300 (R5 715) by a Harare magistrates court following his arrest upon the team's return from the COSAFA tournament in South Africa, according to NewsDay

The 43-year-old was accused of indecent assault by a member of his technical staff, who claims that she was assaulted on two occasions, in Zimbabwe and in South Africa.

The unnamed woman, whose identity is being protected, alleges that the first incident took place during a pre-tournament camp in Harare, when the coach tried to kiss her without her consent, but she rejected his inappropriate advances.

The other incident is said to have occurred in Gauteng, when Mlauzi asked her to come to his room for a massage and later grabbed her buttock.

This prompted the accuser to file a complaint to the COSAFA Safeguarding Officer, which led to the manager's suspension for the following game.

However, the Mighty Warriors boss challenged the court's jurisdiction as the alleged incident occurred in Mzansi, but his application was dismissed by magistrate Yeukai Dzuda.

Mlauzi is now set for trial on 27 October.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has opened their own investigation into the matter, but national team staff members are believed to have voiced their concerns about how the football governing body has handled the case, with the tactician being allowed to stay in the same hotel as the victim while they were in South Africa.

Zimbabwe finished fourth at the COSAFA Women's Cup, and Mlauzi only missed one game after the allegations were made, when he was forced him to watch their semi-final defeat to Zambia from the stands.

He then made a return to the touchline when his side played in their third-place play-off defeat to Mozambique on last Sunday.
