Man Utd finally off the mark in UCL group stages

Manchester United 1-0 FC Copenhagen

Manchester United got their first win in the UEFA Champions League group stages through a 1-0 victory over FC Copenhagen in Group A.

The Red Devils made two changes from Saturday's win over Sheffield United as Raphael Varane and Sergio Reguilon replaced Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof.

Having run Bayern Munich close last time out, the Danish giants nearly stunned United earlier on where Diogo Goncalves struck the post from close-range off Mohamed Elyounoussi's ball.

Following a tense spell, the Red Devils had the winner late on when former captain Harry Maguire showed up to head in Christian Eriksen's corner.

Copenhagen had the chance to grab an equaliser in added time from the penalty spot, but Andre Onana went the right way and saved Jordan Larsson's spot-kick to seal the win for United.

Sporting Braga 1-2 Real Madrid

Real Madrid maintained top spot in Group C with a 2-1 win over Super Liga outfit SC Braga on Tuesday.

Madrid removed David Alaba, Ferland Mendy, Aurelien Tchouameni and Toni Kroos to introduce Nacho Fernandez, Fran Garcia, Eduardo Camavinga and Luka Modric from the draw at Sevilla.

The changes didn't affect matters as Madrid went ahead early on when Vinicius Junior's cross picked out compatriot Rodrygo who made no mistake.

Los Blancos added a second goal following the break when a breathtaking counter-attack saw Vinicius' cutback meet Jude Bellingham to find the bottom-corner.

Braga got a lifeline just after falling further behind as Alvaro Djalo brought a pin-point cross into the area under control and beat Kepa Arrizabalaga with a composed finish.

Sevilla 1-2 Arsenal

Arsenal returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Sevilla to go to the top of Group B.

David Raya remained in goal ahead of Aaron Ramsdale before Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka set out in the final third as the Gunners looked to return to winning ways in the group.

After a tense opening, the Gunners bagged the lead on the stroke of halftime when Gabriel Martinelli raced clear following Gabriel Jesus' through pass and tucked in a gaping net.

Jesus turned on the host again shortly after halftime as he fed off Declan Rice's assist to open angle and curled smartly in the far corner.

Serbian Nemanja Gudelj beat defender William Saliba to a corner-kick and nodded in to give the host a lifeline, but the Gunners held on to claim the win and leave their counterparts winless in the group.

RC Lens 1-1 PSV Eindhoven

PSV Eindhoven remained winless and at the bottom of Group B following a 1-1 draw against RC Lens on the road.

The Eredivisie side drew first blood following the break, with the first half ending goalless as Johan Bakayoko received a well-weighted layoff to cut-in and find the net.

Lens, who came from behind last time out to see off Arsenal, bounced back to rescue a point when Elye Wahi rose high in the area to finish beyond Walter Benitez.

Union Berlin 0-1 Napoli

Napoli surged to second spot in Group C after seeing off Union Berlin 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Nigerian talisman Victor Osimhen was the obvious absentee for Napoli, who had Giancomo Raspodori partnering Matteo Politano and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia up top.

Veteran defender Leonardo Bonucci was left on the bench by the host, as the first half saw no goals despite a number of near misses either end.

The Italian champions bagged the winner midway in the second half after a certain Raspadori combined with Kvaratskhelia to get the better of goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow.

SL Benfica 0-1 Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad remained at the top of Group D ahead of Inter Milan after recording a hard-fought 1-0 win over SL Benfica.

It took a simple finish at the near post from star man Brais Mendez in the middle of the second half to give the LaLiga boys maximum points.

With this defeat, Benfica are bottom of the group and are yet to win having lost all of their three matches played so far.
