OFFICIAL: Al Ahly address CAF over AFL ref errors after Downs loss

Following their loss to Mamelodi Sundowns, Egyptian giants Al Ahly have officially released a statement addressing CAF over what they feel have been refereeing errors against them in both the CAF Super Cup and the African Football League.

The Red Devils suffered a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their AFL semi-final encounter with Sundowns on Sunday.

In a statement released late on Monday night, the club requested to CAF that the "arbitration errors" that took place during the Egyptian side's CAF Super Cup contests against Algeria's USM Algiers and their AFL ties against Tanzania's Simba and Sundowns not be repeated.

The statement added that the errors directly affected their match results and put African football in a negative light.

The club went on to request that urgent steps be taken to resolve the matter to ensure the success of African competitions.

During their defeat to Sundowns, Ahly saw a penalty appeal rejected by the match referee.

Speaking at a post-match conference, the side's head coach Marcel Koller expressed his dismay at match officials on the day, questioning the presence of VAR.

"I think we had earned a penalty by the end of the game, but I don't know why the referees in Africa don't contact VAR," he said at the time

"There is VAR and you don't contact the VAR in such situations, it was very obvious for me.
