Al Ahly boss: Tau was clearly obstructed

Ahead of the second leg tonight, Al Ahly boss Marcel Koller has reiterated his stance that Percy Tau should have been awarded a penalty in his side's first-leg semi-final African Football League defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.

On Sunday, Downs claimed a narrow 1-0 advantage following a stunning Thapelo Maseko strike at Loftus Versfeld stadium in Tshwane, with the second leg set to take place in Cairo on Wednesday night.

That game was not without drama as Al Ahly were evidently left disgruntled about some of the officiating decisions on the day, with their manager hitting out at the lack of involvement from the video assistant referee (VAR) afterwards.

Koller had insisted that Tau was obstructed by a Masandawana player and that they should have been awarded a spot-kick as a result.

A day later, the Red Devils released a statement confirming they had filed a complaint to CAF about refereeing errors in that game, as well as in their earlier AFL fixtures against Simba SC and in the CAF Super Cup tie against USM Alger.

Speaking during a press conference ahead of Wednesday night's crucial second leg between Ahly and Sundowns, Koller revisited the incident and maintained his initial stance that Tau was fouled.

"I am very happy that tomorrow's match will witness the attendance of the full capacity of our audience, whose importance we know very well. It is a great audience capable of moving stones, and its presence gives us the necessary motivation to achieve our goals," the Swiss coach said, per the club's official website.

"Tomorrow's match will be primarily tactical. We will give everything we have to achieve victory and continue the journey in the tournament.

"In the first leg in South Africa, we had a confirmed penalty kick after Percy Tau was clearly obstructed. I did not talk about decisions that did not affect the course of the match, and the video referee should have called the arena referee, which did not happen.

"I hope in tomorrow's match that everyone realises that this is the job of video referees in general."

Sundowns boss Rulani Mokwena has since hit back at the Egyptian giants for their complaints, saying that Al Ahly only complain when they taste defeat.

"I'm surprised that Al Ahly complained about everything," Mokwena said in a pre-match press conference, according to KingFut.

"Before the first leg, Al Ahly complained about the kick-off time, yet they are allowed to have the game at the time that suits them, but you hear no complaints from Mamelodi Sundowns.

"They only complain about referees when they lose. Jose Mourinho once said that when a big club starts to look for other factors apart from football, they start losing their status as a big club.

"I hope that's not the case with Al Ahly because they are the flagship of African football. The rest of the world and Europe look at Al Ahly as a reflection of what African football represents."
