Ruthless Man City net six to reclaim top spot

Manchester City moved top of the Premier League table with a 6-1 thrashing of Bournemouth at the Etihad on Saturday evening.

Having missed last weekend's win at rivals Manchester United, the Citizens welcomed back Manuel Akanji from suspension and brought in Nathan Ake, Jeremy Doku and Mateo Kovacic.

Kovacic looked to have the early control when he burst through the midfield to layoff to Erling Haaland who in-turn set-up Rodri to have a shot at goal, but the effort went wide.

Bournemouth were under fire again midway in the first spell as a downward header from Haaland following a teasing cross by Julian Alvarez trickled off the upright.

The champions were in front on the stroke of the half-hour mark when Doku stepped a yard in the area and drilled in a layoff from Rodri past the visiting goalkeeper Ionut Radu.

Doku reversed the roles three minutes from making the breakthrough when he broke out right to send in a low ball for Bernardo Silva to stab home.

City made it three after a powerful snap shot outside the danger area by Doku bounced off Akanji before it rolled beyond the reach of Radu.

Star striker Haaland didn't come out in the second half after he had seemingly picked up a knock and opted no take any risks thus withdrew him to bring on Phil Foden.

Doku continued a fine day's work in the latter period when he found an opening to release Foden to go in and find the back of the net.

Bournemouth did get one back later on as a lapse of concentration in the City defence allowed Luis Sinisterra to get a touch in the box and find the net.

The Citizens continued their menacing act and grabbed a fifth when Silva pulled wide to latch onto Doku's ball and cut inside to beat one challenge before applying a deft finish.

It got worse for the visitors two minutes before the end as defender Ake entered the area to beat Radu with a diving header, and witnessed City record a remarkable victory to return to the top of the table.
