Mathoho’s financial quandary post Chiefs exit

Veteran defender Mulomowandau Mathoho continues stuck in the football wilderness after choosing not to take the football opportunities that have been presented to him.

Mathoho was released by Kaizer Chiefs in May after 11 years at the club where he rose to total 34 Bafana Bafana caps while venturing into business.

While at Chiefs, Mathoho also grew to establish himself as a regular earning himself the priviledge of going home with six figure earnings every month in the last two contracts that he signed.

However, with his departure from Chiefs having come at 33 and after a period of not playing any competitive football for over a year Mathoho has found himself at crossroads.

Mathoho had an awful end to his time at Chiefs playing a mere minute in his last season (2022/23).

The lanky defender's last proper appearance was in March 2022 when he played until half-time against Golden Arrows before being withdrawn after his blunder handed the visitors the goal that won them the match.

'Tower' has already had the opportunity of joining TS Galaxy but chose not to take it for financial reasons after what he was offered (figure known to this website) was way less than what he was expecting.

The former Bloemfontein Celtic defender also briefly trained with SuperSport United before leaving.

Mathoho has instead chosen to focus on his non-football related interests while continuing to stay at his residency in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg.

With the months ticking on it now means Mathoho is now five months shy of clocking two years since he last played competitive football.

This then presents a challenge of clubs being hesitant in approaching him considering his lack of gametime along with his financial demands.

The truth that will be difficult to swallow for Mathoho is that whatever football opportunity he gets next, the earnings will be way less than what he was getting at Chiefs.

There has also been mention of taking up with JDR Stars in the first division which will keep him in Gauteng instead of moving to Limpopo where there has also been mention of interest.
