Lewandowski rescues victory for wasteful Barca

Defending champions FC Barcelona came from behind to snatch a 2-1 victory over Deportivo Alaves in LaLiga on Sunday evening.

Two changes were presented by the Catalans following last week's draw at Real Sociedad, with Pedri introduced for Gavi and Lamine Yamal hauled in ahead of Alejandro Balde.

Alaves took just a minute to hit the ground running as a move straight from kick-off saw a switch of play allow Javi Lopez to cut in and cross for Samu Omordion to tap in.

The latter were keen to bag a double nine minutes apart through yet another tap-in off a cross by Andoni Gorosabel, but he hit the side-netting in this instance.

Barcelona came alive following the underwhelming period and could've level with a half-volley by Robert Lewandowski off Ilkay Gundogan's chipped pass, but a tremendous stop from goalkeeper Antonio Sivera denied the Pole.

With no substitutions ahead of the second half, the Catalans were quick out of the starting blocks as Joao Cancelo drew a cutback from a clever angle to force a save from Sivera.

Barca were level a little to seven minutes played in the second half when Lewandowski displayed great strength to rise above Rafael Zamora and head in Jules Kounde's cross.

The two teams decided to issue changes midway through the second period, with Barca bringing on Raphinha for Fermin Lopez and Abderrahman Rebbach introduced for Luis Rioja on the visitors' side.

Lewandowski bagged a brace in the last 12 minutes after he lined-up from the spot and thumped in the roof of the net as Ferran Torres won the penalty from a foul by Abdelkabir Abqar.

Barcelona didn't encounter any response from the visiting team and closed out the win to go two points off rivals Real Madrid in second spot and four points off first-place Girona.
