Chelsea & Man City play out 8-goal Premier League classic

Premier League leaders Manchester City and Chelsea played to a thrilling 4-4 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.

Manuel Akanji replaced the injured John Stones as Bernardo Silva, Rodrigo, Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku were recalled for City, while Chelsea made a single change in Marc Cucurella coming in for the absent Levy Colwill.

Cucurella didn't have a telling impact and conceded a penalty during the midway point when he was judged to have brought down Erling Haaland, and left the Norwegian to step up and convert the spot-kick.

The Blues drew level after just five minutes where Thiago Silva escaped one challenge to get on the end of Conor Gallagher's corner and nodded past City goalkeeper Ederson.

Chelsea stunned the title holders and took the lead after Raheem Sterling got one over his former employers when he showed up at the back-post to turn in Reece James' delivery.

However, the Citizens were back on level terms when Akanji made a timeous leap to get ahead of Silva's cross following a short-corner and nodded in on the stroke of halftime.

City were in front a minute in the second half after Haaland met a delightful delivery from Alvarez and arrowed in at the back-post with an unorthodox finish.

The Blues refused to drop their heads and threatened to go level with a mazy run by Cole Palmer, but Ederson rushed out and parried as City introduced Grealish for Doku.

Ederson was undone near the last 20 minutes when he fluffed a long-range shot by Gallagher back into play and Nicolas Jackson charged to finish on the follow-up.

The reigning champions regained the lead after a one-touch move culminated an opening where Rodri entered to riffle in off Thiago Silva's outstretched leg.

Chelsea got a lifeline in additional time when substitute Armando Borja went tumbling down in the area to win a penalty and Palmer did the honours with a solid finish against his former club, earning the Blues a point.
