Broos lambasts dreadful pitch, 3-hour bus ride in shock Rwanda defeat

A dejected Hugo Broos lambasted the playing conditions alongside an arduous 3-hour bus ride as his Bafana Bafana side fell to a shock 2-0 defeat to Rwanda at the Huye Stadium on Tuesday.

An early error by defender Nkosinathi Sibisi saw Bafana concede an early goal in the 12th minute before the hosts doubled their lead in the 28th minute.

The win is a first in almost exactly a year for The Wasps while the defeat ends Bafana's 12-game undefeated streak.

A frustrated Broos hit out at the poor playing conditions and called on FIFA to introduce regulations on the extensive travel that away teams endure that has become synonymous with CAF competitions.

"It's unbelievable that a qualifier is played on such a pitch, it's impossible but okay it is what it is," Broos said.

"I think CAF and FIFA need to be stricter on the rules, where you play. We are talking about professional football, we are talking about the qualifiers for the biggest tournament of professional football, the World Cup.

"Then you have to play on such a pitch, secondly I think it's not normal when you arrive in a country that you still need to travel three hours by bus before you are at your final destination.

"I will not say this is the reason why we lost the game, no, not at all.

"But I think that those things have got to change, because we are in 2023, and we talking about professional football.

"This pitch is not for professional football, and you don't let the opponent travel three hours before it is at the final destination.

"Again this is only a remark I make, and it's not the reason for the defeat today."

Bafana will next contest the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament to be hosted in the Ivory Coast in January.
