Another EPL giant set for a points deduction?

Another Premier League giant is now reportedly at risk of having points deducted from their season.

After Everton were recently stripped of 10 league points, Tottenham Hotspur may be the next EPL side to face a similar punishment or potentially even worse, according to The Times.

The Merseyside club was stripped of the points after an independent commission determined that they had breached the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Now, Spurs are alleged to have breached transfer rules after new evidence arose suggesting that the club used an unlicensed agent in a deal that saw them sell Jermain Defoe to Portsmouth for a fee of £7.5 million (R174 million) in 2008.

Although the case was heard at the time, no action was taken against the London-based club then.

However, a statement by the Football Association (FA) suggests that the matter will be looked into again.

"The case was heard by an independent arbitration panel 15 years ago," an FA spokeswoman said.

"The FA was not a party to the arbitration. It is unclear how much information was shared with the FA at the time, and no disciplinary action was taken.

"If there is new evidence which was not available at the time, and which suggests serious breaches of our rules took place, we will review it."

Independent experts are said to have told The Times that breaches of this manner "should be regarded as an extremely serious matter, potentially leading to heavy sanctions".

They added that clubs that violated the regulations in place face the possibility of being hit with a transfer ban, a points deduction or possibly even relegation, while players and agents could receive either a fine, a ban, or just a warning.
