Pirates star refuses to throw in the towel on title pursuit

Orlando Pirates midfielder Siphelo Baloni is refusing to throw in the towel on Orlando Pirates' title ambitions despite a 11-point gap behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Buccaneers have endured a bittersweet start to the season that has seen the club successfully defend their MTN8 title but crash out of both the CAF Champions League and Carling Knockout competitions.

In the league, the Sea Robbers have not enjoyed better fortunes, collecting just four wins from eleven matches. The subsequent result is an 11 point-gap behind Mamelodi Sundowns, who have maintained a 100% win rate, collecting nine wins from nine matches.

Despite the daunting gap, Pirates midfielder Baloni is adamant that the side can still mount a challenge for the top spot. In the football environment, there will always be negative you," Baloni said at a recent adidas event at Maponya Mall.

"But we as Pirates players believe in ourselves, we believe that we will get there, game by game. If we can be consistent, keep on winning games, we believe that we will get there, game by game.

"We will be at the top, trust me. We will make it."

Meanwhile, Riveiro assured supporters that the league title remains the 'most important' pursuit.

"It's a fact we haven't won the league in a long time," Riveiro in October.

"The league is the most important competition. [You play] 30 games away and home against everybody in every type of circumstance, under hot and rainy [conditions]. So it's the most important competition and we really want to find our rhythm in that competition."

After winning two of their last five matches, the Soweto giants will have a chance to get their title chase back on track when they take on rivals Moroka Swallows on Tuesday.

The match will be played at Orlando Stadium. Kick-off is at 19:30.
