Bafana complaints heard, CAF to take action in Rwanda

Bafana Bafana's complaints about the pitch for their shock 2-0 loss to Rwanda last month have now been heard, with it confirmed that CAF is taking action.

On 21 November, South Africa suffered their first defeat of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign after going down 2-0 at the hands of minnows Rwanda.

Currently ranked 133rd in the world by FIFA, the result was a huge upset, leaving Bafana manager Hugo Broos extremely disgruntled over the conditions in which the match took place.

The game was played at the Huye Stadium in Butare, which features an artificial pitch, in extremely wet conditions due to rain, and it was evident the South Africans struggled with the environment on the day.

"When you see the first 20 minutes, it's unbelievable that a qualifier of a World Cup is played on such a pitch," Broos said after the fixture, according to Africa Top Sports.

"It's impossible. But okay, it is what it is and I think FIFA has to be stricter on the rules where you going to play, we are talking about professional football, we're talking about qualifiers of the biggest tournament [in the world], then you play on such a pitch.

"We're talking about professional football and this pitch is not professional, and you don't let an opponent travel three hours from an airport for their destination, this is only my remark, nothing to do with the defeat of today."

The Belgian's words have since been heard, with the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) confirming that they have received a letter from CAF regarding the matter.

Per a statement from FERWAFA: "CAF will undertake an independent inspection of the Huye Stadium conducted by an artificial pitch expert, to assess the current stage of the pitch for use in CAF/FIFA senior A international matches.

"We underline that the CAF decision will be made based on the status of the stadium and the level of compliance reported at the time of inspection."

FERWAFA has been asked to schedule a visit for CAF officials to inspect the venue and once an inspection report is completed, a decision will be taken as to whether or not the stadium meets the requirements for approval.
