Mayo: I want to be amongst the best in the country

In-demand Cape Town City and Bafana Bafana forward Khanyiso Mayo has opened up his plans for the 2023/24 Premier Soccer League Season.

Following his slow start into the current season, Mayo has finally found a goalscoring touch and his goals have seen the Citizens move to position 2 on the DStv Premiership log table with 25 points in 14 matches.

They are five points shy of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns who carry a five-point advantage.

The 25-year-old says this season he targets to be the outright winner of the Golden Boot and not share it like he did last season.

So far Mayo has scored six times in 14 league matches he has played in. Speaking to KickOff, he explains his slow start to the season.

"Like last season I'm currently one of the joint top goalscorers, which means I'm still in the race to compete and win the Golden Boot again, and this time I'm not sharing," Mayo tells KickOff.

"I want to be a solo winner and I want to be recognized amongst the best in the country. Yes, this season I did experience a slow start and it has to happen after coming back after pre-season.

"And the games were coming thick and fast because they were played back to back, you played three times in a space of seven days. But after getting quite a few rests, I managed to find my feet again. It was about finding that one goal that was going to open doors for more goals for me.

"What helped me is... I was patient, that's what I emphasized to myself, even my Dad (South African legend Patrick Mayo) will attest that composure in the box, is one thing that no one can teach you."
