Europe-based African star 'refuses' AFCON call-up

A Europe-based African star has now reportedly refused a call-up to represent his country at the African Cup of Nations.

Less than two weeks remain before the continent's grand showpiece takes centre stage in the Ivory Coast.

The teams are almost all set, with most of the participating nations having confirmed their final squads for the tournament.

There have been a few challenges, though, with some players having been forcefully ruled out of the tournament due to injury, such as Arsenal star Thomas Partey of Ghana.

However, one footballer seems to simply be prioritising his club exploits over international duty, with five-time champions Cameroon now set to be without their bright talent Francois Mughe despite him being named in their final selection for the showpiece.

According to French outlet L'Equipe, the 19-year-old has turned down the opportunity to go to AFCON because he wants to focus on making progress at French club Olympique Marseille after making only a measly seven appearances for the team so far this season.

The Ligue 1 outfit is said to have confirmed that the decision was a call made solely by the young forward.

Although he is yet to make his senior Cameroon debut, Mughe was expected to join the Indomitable Lions at a pre-tournament camp in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Rigobert Song's side is also still without goalkeeper Andre Onana after he reportedly requested to join the squad a little later than expected due to his commitments at Manchester United.
