Tau set for major 'decision' after AFCON

Bafana Bafana star Percy is reportedly set for a huge decision on his future once the Africa Cup of Nations is completed.

The 2023 CAF Men's Inter-club Player of the Year is now down to the final six months of his contract at Al Ahly after he joined the club from Brighton Hove Albion back in August 2021 for a fee of €1.8 million (R36.7 million).

His time in Cairo has been nothing short of successful as he has won seven trophies with Ahly, including the 2022/23 CAF Champions League and Egyptian Super Cup titles.

Now considered one of the Red Devils' most important players, his manager Marcel Koller has now reportedly requested that the club to offer him a new contract, which would keep him in Cairo beyond June 2024 if he agrees.

According to Kooora, the Swiss coach has also asked for three other players to be offered new deals, namely Mohamed Hani, Ali Maaloul and Ahmed Nabil Koka.

It is claimed that negotiations over a new contract for the South Africa international will take place once he is back from the AFCON in Ivory Coast.

In recent months, there has also been speculation of interest in him from Europe and the Middle East, while there has also been some whispers that a return to his former club Mamelodi Sundowns could be another alternative.

The man who brought him to Egypt, coach Pitso Mosimane, recently spoke of the decision to give the player a chance while they were still at Sundowns and also alluded to the move to Ahly from Brighton.

Speaking of his former player, Mosimane said in a podcast interview on Sports Live with BBK: "Percy Tau, I can put my head on the block.

"Percy [Tau] and Khaya Shozi were close [while we were at Sundowns]. I knew I had a succession plan [at Sundowns]. We gave Khaya a senior contract before Percy. [And I said to Percy] Prove to me. I'm happy to be proven wrong [that you're ready to play in the first team].

"[People say Percy Tau] leaving Brighton to join Al Ahly was a downgrade. It depends on how you look at it.

"You're moving from EPL to Egypt, but it's not a downgrade when you're being loaned to Belgium.

"Brighton players will never play at the [FIFA] Club World Cup.

"Percy is not just any other player. I don't coach Percy; I don't tell him to work hard."
