My First Pay Cheque - Calvin Motloung

In this edition of My First Paycheque, KickOff catches up with former Tembisa Classic and Jomo Cosmos defender Calvin Motloung.

Motloung reveals how the Classic management lied just to convince him to sign on the dotted lines.

Who you signed for?

"I was playing for Tembisa Classic, and that was in 1999 while we were playing in the second division which was sponsored by the United Bank.

"There were no salaries there, we only got paid if we won four matches in a month.

How much was it?

"I don't remember very well but it was less than R1000. Back then R1000 was okay, it made you feel like somebody who was employed.

"I was 19 years old at the time."

How do do I celebrate?

"I bought kotas for my four friends for lunch and took the rest home. Those days I was not so clued up when it came to money.

"All I wanted was to play football nothing more."

What did I buy with it?

"I did a lay-buy at Sales House, there was this nice T-shirt I wanted with all my heart. It cost R300.

"It was tough back then because even at home we couldn't afford to buy ourselves some nice things."

Did it last you the full month?

"No. Remember my mom kept some of the money and used it to buy what we needed at home.

"She would give me and my sibling a R5 or R10 as pocket money. I didn't care much about money those days.

"I remember when Classic got promoted to the PSL I was the youngest captain in the league at the age of 23.

"When it was time to sign our contracts, Sinky Mnisi and one of the directors said to me, you are the youngest captain in the league, and we are now going to make you the highest-paid player in this club, so please sign here, and here and also there. We are going to pay you R5000 salary a month.

"I couldn't contain my excitement. Imagine me as a youngster back then earning more than my senior teammates Idah Peterside and the in-demand Arthur Zwane.

"To my surprise, I only realized after months later that I was one of the lowest earners at the club. Maybe I was number 10 on the list (laughs)."
