OFFICIAL: Star leaves Pitso's Abha 'against his wish'

It has been confirmed that a high-profile striker has officially left Pitso Mosimane's Abha Club, although reports suggest that the departure was against the South African coach's wishes.

French-born Cameroon star Karl Toko Ekambi has joined Al Ettifaq from Abha, with the move coming just six months after the striker joined from Olympique Lyon in a move worth €1.5 million (R30 million).

The transfer also comes just two weeks after Mosimane was appointed to oversee the side for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign, with the South African boss believed to have made an effort to prevent the player's departure, according to Al-Madin.

With Mosimane's attempt to keep the forward at Abha seemingly failing, Ekambi is now set to play under Steven Gerrard, with a statement by Al Ettifaq on their official website confirming: "The management of Al Ettifaq Club, headed by Mr. Samer Al-Meshal, signed a professional contract with Cameroonian striker Toko Ekambi, coming from Abha Club in support of Fares Al-Dahna's attack, on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season.

"The signing ceremony took place today, Tuesday, via email, and he will join the team immediately after completing his participation with his country's national team.

"It is worth noting that Ekambi, born in 1992, has worked at the Paris Club since 2011, and has had professional experiences with the French clubs Sochaux, the Spanish Villarreal, the French Olympique Lyonnais, and the French club Rennes, while his last stop was with the Abha Club, where he scored five goals in the league from 14 matches, and two goals from three matches in the King's Cup competition.

"The Cameroonian striker also participated with his country's national team in many tournaments, and one of his most important achievements is winning the Africa Cup of Nations in the 2017 season."
