Senegal star lashes out at 'corrupt' CAF after shock AFCON exit

With defending champions Senegal having been dumped out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday night, one of their players has since accused CAF of being "corrupt".

The Lions of Teranga bowed out of the competition following a 5-4 defeat on penalties to hosts Ivory Coast on Monday. It was a relatively evenly contested match, with the Ivorians having 57% ball possession throughout the 120 minutes, while Senegal had 13 attempts at goal compared to their opponents' eight.

The result certainly hurt Senegal as they were the only team to have won all three of their group-stage matches at this year's tournament, with victories over Cameroon, Guinea, and The Gambia.

During the match on Monday night, some Senegalese stars were left unhappy with some of the refereeing decisions.

One such player was Krepin Diatta, who played the full 120 minutes.

The 24-year-old AS Monaco was left furious at the match officials after the final whistle, highlighting a decision to not award Senegal a penalty for what he deemed to be a foul on his teammate Ismaila Sarr in the box.

The referee stuck to his non-penalty decision, though, and was not instructed by VAR to overturn his decision, a call that seemingly sent Diatta into a rage, according to GetFrenchFootballNews.

"You've killed us, you're corrupt! Keep your African Cup," the winger said after the game while directing his comments towards the media and members of CAF.

"You go and consult VAR to give them a penalty, but a guy (Sarr) runs 40 metres, overlaps, breaks into the box and you can't go and look at the VAR. I'm sorry, but it's ridiculous.

"I'm really sorry, but they've killed our competition there."
